Digital Harmony: Helping Young Adults Master Mental Health

Generation Z, born between 1997 and 2012, is distinct in many ways. They are the first generation to grow up with social media and internet-enabled mobile devices, providing them with unprecedented access to global content and connections. This digital immersion has shaped their experiences and perspectives in profound ways.
However, the pervasive use of social media has significantly impacted the mental health of Generation Z. A Census Bureau study from fall 2023 revealed alarming trends: over 44% of Gen Z young adults (ages 18-24) reported persistent feelings of nervousness, anxiety, or being on edge, while 33% experienced persistent feelings of depression, hopelessness, or being down.[1] The constant exposure to social media, which facilitates peer comparisons, fear of missing out (FOMO), and addiction, exacerbates these mental health challenges.
We sat down with Susan Reynolds, an experienced author and advocate for digital well-being, youth leadership, and mindfulness, during Mental Health Awareness Month. Watch as we discuss the effects of the digital world on younger people and strategies to unplug and promote mental well-being.
